Exporting Livestock

When an Australian exporter receives an order for cattle, he sources the cattle directly from the producer or through an agent.

Cattle are drafted by the exporter according to the individual customer specifications, as supplied by the importer.

The cattle are then exported by modern “road train” to a AQIS registered export quarantine facility, prior to loading.

These are world-class facilities allowing animals to be processed while managing their welfare.

The cattle are usually held in export quarantine facilities for 3-5 days before loading and are introduced to the special feed cubes they will encounter on their journey.

The health and welfare of each animal is of paramount importance to Australia.

Any treatments required to adhere to the health protocols of an importing country are carried out under the supervision of a Government authorised veterinarian.

Each animal must be inspected and certified fit for export before it is allowed to board the ship. Good organisation and controlled timing mean that the cattle are loaded efficiently with minimal human contact.

With less stress, the animals maintain better condition, so economic and welfare considerations are not mutually exclusive in this industry.
